Porochí, Chihuahua

Hola! My second project visit was to Artesanías (arts and crafts) Porochí, near Bahuichivo (Urique), Chihuahua, and right on the Copper Canyon train line (Chepe). This group of indigenous women are Tarahumaras or Rarámuris, in their language, which means "light footed". And they are known to be great runners of marathon or ultra marathon distances, they say because running from village to village was the only form of transporation. These women make waris (woven baskets) of pine needles (which have a wonderful forest odor) and of agave (lechuguilla) fibers for the larger baskets.

The women received financial aid from the government to build an arts and crafts center to sell their waris and other crafts (hand stitched towels) at fair pricing. They are hand selecting local stones and cutting them to fit the walls. Laborious work! I will be helping them with their cost and pricing analyses.
